Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry is a wonderful way to help children during extensive procedures, those with extreme anxiety, low pain tolerance, strong gag reflexes, physical handicaps or children who find it very difficult to sit still. Both Dr Smith and Dr. Marlowe are licensed in and have extensive experience providing sedation dentistry. Sedation can range from the use of nitrous oxide to calm a patient to general anesthetics used to put patients to sleep. Procedures like fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, cosmetic procedures and periodontal treatments often require sedation.
Sedation is endorsed by the American Dental Association and is an effective way to make many patients comfortable during their dental visit. Before using a sedative or anesthetic, it is important to tell your dentist about any medications or medical treatments your child is receiving. Before administering any sedative or anesthetic, your dentist will talk to you and your child about the process of sedation and pre- and post-sedation instructions.
Every situation in which sedation may be needed is unique. Our staff and pediatric dentists would be happy to consult with you about your child’s needs to specify which sedation option would make your child’s experience most pleasant.
